SHERA Graduate Student / Independent Scholar Travel Grant for participation in CAA 2019

Thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous donor, the Society is pleased to announce the SHERA Graduate Student / Independent Scholar Travel Grant to defray travel costs through the awarding of up to $1,000 for local travel and up to $1,500 for international travel to one member presenting a paper at the CAA Annual Conference or the ASEEES Annual Convention. The grant is given for five consecutive years (2017-2021), alternating between the CAA conferences and the ASEEES conventions, beginning with CAA 2017 in New York City. The alternating order of the subsequent grants is as follows: CAA 2017, ASEEES 2018, CAA 2019, ASEEES 2020, CAA 2021.

Applications will be evaluated based on the academic merit of the paper topic and financial need. SHERA is especially committed to subsidizing a graduate student or independent scholar who is attending the conference for the first time and presenting a paper, and who has no local institutional resources for travel support. Eligible independent scholars are those SHERA members who have been awarded the Ph.D. within the previous five years. For the CAA 2019 grant, applications are limited to those who have received the Ph.D. no earlier than 2013. Applicants must be SHERA members in good standing and must submit:

1. the title and a brief description of their paper (no more than 250 words);
2. a brief CV (no more than two pages);
3. the names of the chair(s) and the title of the panel in which the applicant is participating;
4. and, a brief statement demonstrating need.

For more information on membership or to become a member, see http://shera-art.org/membership/join-shera.php Within two months after the conference, the recipient is required to submit to the SHERA Board a brief report outlining how participation in the conference furthered the development of their research. If the recipient has to withdraw from the conference for any reason, all funds must be returned to SHERA no later than the opening day of the conference. Panel proposals for a SHERA sponsored panel for the 2019 CAA Annual Conference in New York, February 13-16, are invited.

We encourage submission of proposals discussing issues of art or art history in any of the fields SHERA as a Society covers. The organizer of the panel must be a CAA member (membership number must be provided) as well as member of SHERA.

Please submit your panel proposal to shera.artarchitecture@gmail.com by April 15, 2018. While SHERA’s Board will select the panel to be submitted on our Society’s behalf to CAA, be reminded that the ultimate decision of acceptance is CAA’s.

The CAA-Getty International Program, generously supported by the Getty Foundation, provides funding to between fifteen and twenty art historians, museum curators, and artists who teach art history to attend CAA’s Annual Conferences. The goal of the project is to increase international participation in CAA, to diversify the association’s membership, and to foster collaborations between North American art historians, artists, and curators and their international colleagues.

Since it began in 2012, the program has brought ninety scholars to the conferences, from forty-one countries located in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and South America. Each year, a preconference colloquium on international topics in art history inaugurates the week, kicking off four days of conference sessions, meetings with new colleagues, and visits to museums and galleries. Subsequent to these events, the program has generated many scholarly collaborations, including publications, conferences, and exhibitions.

In 2017, CAA organized a reunion to celebrate five successful years of the CAA-Getty International Program. Twenty alumni were selected to present papers at the Annual Conference in New York, held February 15-18, 2017. Organized into four sessions about international topics in art history, these Global Conversations were chaired by distinguished scholars from the United States and featured presentations by the CAA-Getty alumni. The papers from these sessions are now archived on the CAA website.

ABOUT THE 2018 GRANT

The 2018 CAA-Getty International Program will support fifteen art historians, museum curators, and artists who teach art history to attend the 106th Annual Conference, taking place in Los Angeles from February 21–24, 2018. The grant covers travel expenses, hotel accommodations for seven nights, per diems, conference registrations, and one-year CAA memberships. The program will include a one-day preconference colloquium on international issues in art history, to be held at the Getty Center on February 14, at which grant recipients will present and discuss their common professional interests and issues. Attendance at the preconference is limited and by invitation only. This year the grant also will fund five alumni from the CAA-Getty International Program to participate in the preconference colloquium and speak at a session during the conference. As they have in previous years, representatives from CAA’s membership will host program participants during the conference week.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?

Applicants must be practicing art historians who teach at a university or work as a curator in a museum, or artists who teach art history. They must have a good working knowledge of English and be available to participate in CAA events from February 21–24, 2018. Only professionals who have not attended a CAA conference previously, and who are from countries underrepresented in CAA’s membership are eligible to apply. The grant excludes scholars from Western Europe and Australia, whose countries are well represented in CAA. It further excludes scholars who have received funds from American foundations or research institutes to participate in conferences or residencies in the United States. Applicants do not need to be CAA members. This grant program is not open to graduate students or to those participating in the 2018 conference as chairs, speakers, or discussants.

ANN: Maya Semina Travel Grant

A generous donation made in the name of Maya Semina will help defray travel costs for one graduate student presenting a paper at the CAA Annual Conference and the ASEEES Annual Convention. Maya Semina is a Russian art historian, whose book about Filipp Maliavin was published by Moscow’s BooksMArt Press in 2014. 1. A student working at either the master’s or doctoral level with a thesis or dissertation topic related to Eastern European, Eurasian and/or Russian art and/or Architecture;

2. Presenting a paper contributing to advancement in this field at a panel at a CAA Annual Conference (chairs, discussants, and any other type of participants are not eligible to apply) or ASEEES Annual Convention;

3. A member of SHERA at the time of application;

4. Live outside the conference city;

5. Have not been recipients of this grant in the past.

CFP: Emerging Scholars of East European, Eurasian, and Russian Art
SHERA-sponsored session at CAA 2017 (New York, Feb 15-18)

The Society of Historians of East European, Eurasian, and Russian Art and Architecture (SHERA) is looking to sponsor a special session at the next College Art Association Conference that highlights the scholarship of advanced Ph.D. candidates and recent graduates working on art historical topics related to Eastern Europe, Eurasia, and Russia. Papers may discuss particular visual themes, sources, methodological perspectives, and/or historiographical issues related to the art and architecture of these regions from the Middle Ages to the present. Of particular interest are papers that also consider the state of the field and address ways in which recent scholarship on the artistic production of these regions may complement, and even provide a corrective to, current art historical narratives.

Note: An ‘emerging scholar’ is a SHERA-member either at the dissertation stage or someone who has received a Ph.D. or M.A. since 2012.

Applications are now being accepted for the second annual HGCEA Emerging Scholars Publication Prize, an award of $500 given to the author of a distinguished essay published the preceding year on any topic in the history of German or Central European art, architecture, design, or visual culture. Submissions, which must be in English and may be from electronic or print publications, must have a publication date of 2013; applicants must be either current PhD students or have earned a PhD in or after 2008 and must be members of HGCEA at the time of application.
